Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Technician

The Town of Bethlehem Department of Public Works is seeking candidates for a GIS Technician. Primary duties include but are not necessarily limited to the following:

  • Collects, edits and updates GIS data using established procedures and departmental standards;
  • Supports field data collection using mobile GIS applications and GPS equipment with limited supervision over field crews;
  • Digitizes features from plans, GPS data and aerial imagery;
  • Produces routine maps and graphics for municipal departments;
  • Performs basic spatial queries and geoprocessing tasks;
  • Conducts basic QA/QC checks to ensure accuracy of attribute and spatial data;
  • Maintains and organizes GIS files, datasets and metadata;
  • Provides first-level GIS assistance to municipal staff and routes complex requests to higher-level GIS personnel
MINUMUM QUALIFICATIONSEITHER:
A. Graduation from an accredited college or university with at least a Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, Planning, Engineering, Computer Science or a closely related field; OR,
B. Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, Planning, Engineering, Computer Science or a closely related field and two (2) years of experience involving the use of geographic information systems.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license will be required at time of appointment and throughout employment.
Starting Salary for this position is $63,253.
