Residents Wanted for Town Boards
The Town of Bethlehem is seeking candidates for several town boards, with a deadline for applications of November 15:
  • Board of Assessment Review
  • Conservation Easement Review Board
  • Ethics Board
  • Zoning Board of Appeals

  • The purpose of the Board of Assessment Review (BAR) is to guarantee taxpayers’ rights by hearing real property assessment complaints (grievances) and arriving at fair and impartial determinations regarding those grievances.
    • The BAR meets for Grievance Day on the fourth Tuesday in May and several times in June for deliberations.
    • In addition to attending meetings and reviewing documents in advance, BAR members should be able to collaborate effectively with a diverse range of people.
    • In 2026, BAR members were compensated at a rate of $17.50 per hour.
    • For more information on the BAR, visit the Town website: townofbethlehem.org/646/Board-of-Assessment-Review

  • The Conservation Easement Review Board (CERB) reviews conservation easement applications and advises the Town on open space planning efforts.
    • The CERB meets as needed, not on a regular schedule.
    • In addition to attending meetings and reviewing documents in advance, CERB members should be able to collaborate effectively with a diverse range of people.
    • For more information on the CERB, visit the Town website: townofbethlehem.org/682/Conservation-Easement-Review-Board

  • Members of the Ethics Board serve in a volunteer capacity and are not compensated for their service. Board members must be town residents and should have general knowledge of ethics in the workplace.
    • Community involvement and other information, which applicants believe is relevant for consideration, should also be submitted.
    • Please note your registration in a political party on your application: by law, no more than two members of the Ethics Board may be registered with the same political party.
    • For more information on the Ethics Board, visit the Town website: townofbethlehem.org/439/Ethics-Board

  • The Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) decides on appeals associated with use variances, area variances, and decisions made by the Town Building Division. The board has the authority to grant relief from applicable provisions of Zoning Law such as building heights, setbacks, and land uses.
    • The ZBA meets at 6 pm on the first and third Wednesday of each month.
    • In addition to attending meetings and reviewing documents in advance, ZBA members should be able to collaborate effectively with a diverse range of people.
    • Annual compensation for ZBA members in 2026 was $7,500.
