DPW Field Operations – Utility Service Helper or Water and Sewer Maintenance Person

The Town of Bethlehem, NY-Department of Public Works is seeking candidates to work as a Utility Service Helper, or a Water and Sewer Maintenance Person, in our Field Operations Division.  The title for this position will be determined by experience of the candidate.  Primary duties include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:
  • Assists in repairing broken water/sewer mains, replaces defective pumps, meters and controls
  • Assists in the installation of water service taps, hydrants and repairs, paints and maintains hydrants
  • Checks complaints on sewer backups, pump station failures, broken pipes, high or low pressure, water meter readings, etc.
  • Assists in the cutting, threading and fitting of pipes in extending utility service pumps
  • Operates a vehicle and motor equipment and uses power and hand tools
  • Responds at all times to emergency repair calls
  • Provides traffic control and employee safety at work site
  • Keeps and maintains the facilities inside and out in a proper manner
Minimum experience for the Utility Service Helper/Water and Sewer Maintenance Person is:  two (2) years of experience in installation, maintenance and operation of water distribution systems. Prior to completion of the probation period, incumbent must possess a commercial driver license, Class B, with air brake and tanker endorsement, and maintain this license during employment.

Requirements for both titles include a valid NYS driver’s license and the ability to wear a respirator and pass a respiratory clearance annually.  Must be available for weekend and night emergency responses.

Benefits include paid vacation, holidays, sick time, full medical and dental insurance, and New York State Retirement Program. Starting Salary for this position ranges from $41,951.00 - $50,955.00 annually.
